Prof. Prashant Kumar Gautam
Director IITTM

Tourism is not merely about visiting places; it is about connecting people, creating livelihoods, celebrating heritage and contributing to nation-building.

India today stands at an important juncture in its development journey. As we move towards the national vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, tourism has the potential to become a powerful engine of inclusive economic growth, employment generation, entrepreneurship, cultural exchange and sustainable development. The Hon’ble Prime Minister has repeatedly emphasised the importance of tourism and the enormous possibilities that India’s heritage, culture, diversity and natural wealth offer to the world.

The Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (IITTM) has an important responsibility in this journey. As an institution under the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, IITTM is committed to the promotion and development of tourism through the creation of professional and future-ready human resources, need-based research, consultancy, capacity building and knowledge support to the tourism sector.

The tourism industry of tomorrow will be significantly different from that of today. Technology, sustainability, artificial intelligence, changing traveller behaviour, experience-based tourism and entrepreneurship are reshaping the sector. Tourism education, therefore, must also continuously evolve.

At IITTM, our endeavour is to move beyond classrooms to destinations, beyond textbooks to experiences, and beyond degrees to competencies. We seek to develop professionals who are not merely employable, but who can become entrepreneurs, innovators and leaders capable of shaping the future of tourism.

We also recognise that the true strength of Indian tourism lies in its people and places. Tourism must create opportunities for local communities, youth, women, artisans, guides and small entrepreneurs, while preserving our cultural heritage and protecting our natural resources. Growth and sustainability must move together.

Going forward, IITTM shall further strengthen the interface between academia, industry, government and communities. Our focus will be on contemporary curricula, experiential learning, stronger industry engagement, destination-based research, entrepreneurship, technology integration, international collaboration and meaningful policy support.

Our aspiration is to position IITTM not only as an institution of tourism education, but as a national knowledge, research and capacity-building hub for tourism, contributing ideas, professionals and solutions for the development of Indian tourism.

I invite our students, faculty, alumni, industry partners, governments, researchers and communities to become active partners in this journey.

Together, let us make tourism a force for employment, entrepreneurship, sustainability, cultural pride and national development—and contribute meaningfully towards the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
